When driving into my workplace's car park this morning, I noticed two fluffy pigeons wandering around and making their way directly into my parking space. I tried to pull in slowly to scare them away but they remained in my space and did not seem to intend moving out of my way. So I had no other option than to stop the car, get out and gently wave the birds away to get into my space and leave the little walkers unharmed.
When I returned to the car park after 5 o'clock I was outraged and saddened to see the bloody bodies of the birds lying on the ground.. Someone had coldbloodedly run over them! I guess not all people are willing to stop the car for some birds..
Pigeons are not small birds, so they can be seen easily on the road. How can anyone be so heartless to just run their car over the innocent living creatures? I just cannot get my head around it.
It breaks my heart every time I see a dead animal on the road and there are so many of them on the roads. I understand that sometimes drivers just cannot see the animal on the road, during nighttime or when roads are busy. Not all accidents as such can be prevented unfortunately.
But when you do see a wild animal from the distance starting to cross the road, please check your mirrors and brake when it's safe to do so. Just a little more care on the roads would, I believe, prevent thousands of unnecessary wildlife deaths on our roads every day..
For my two little friends from this morning - rest in peace.
